Dismounted Rebel Cavalry

Here are 38 dismounted Confederate cavalrymen.  All figures are from Sash and Saber.  The flags are from GMB.

I like my rebels to have the classic "motley" look.  I used a variety of greys, butternuts, and browns on these figures.

These figures are the last I am likely to finish for some time.  I went back to teaching full time last week, and full time teaching takes much more than 40 hours per week.  I'm afraid I won't have much time to paint any time soon!

84th New York (14th "Brooklyn" New York State Militia)

Sash and Saber makes my favorite 28mm Civil War figures, so when Chris Hughes announced that he was sculpting the famous 14th Brooklyn, in their distinctive chasseurs uniform, I knew I had to paint that regiment.  The figures definitely fit well with the rest of his line.

Here is the 34 figure regiment.

I went with the marching figures, rather than the skirmishing men, as I prefer my close order units in marching poses.

Flags for this unit, as for all my Civil War units, are from GMB Designs.

The poses are very natural and lifelike, with nice raised detail and good proportions.

If you game the American Civil War in 28mm, you'll need a few packs of these figures.  No other manufacturer has figures that portray this famous regiment, and these are beauties.

Yet More AWI Figures

This has been the summer of the American Revolution for me.  First I painted 205 figures on commission for Glenn, then I followed that up with 139 British figures for me.  Now I have just finished these 28 grenadiers, all from Old Glory's second edition.  Added to what I already had painted, I will now be able to run any medium sized scenario with "British Grenadier!" rules.

I may not quite be done with AWI.  I have two battalions of the 71st Foot ready for priming, and I have another 3-4 regiments of Fife & Drum British awaiting prep work.

More 28mm Austrian Generals

I finished my Austrian army command stand yesterday.  This fellow and his aides should work for either the Italian Campaign or for 1809.  All figures are from Perry.  The center figure is a general and the flanking figures are Colonels.

71st Foot, King's Mountain Miniatures

Bill Nevins of King's Mountain Miniatures was kind enough to send me some samples of his range.  These 28mm figures are specifically intended to portray the 71st Foot "Fraser's Highlanders," who wore the Scottish bonnet throughout the war.  Troiani writes that they wore tartan trousers throughout the war as well, but I did not have the nerve to attempt the pattern on these figures.

Sculpted by Alan Marsh, these are beautiful figures.  I've spent a lot of time over the past six weeks painting British button lace; these figures have the best defined lace I have found, making them very easy to paint.  In fact, every detail on these figures seems designed with the painted in mind.  Crisp, prominent relief on straps, cuffs, turnbacks, even cap lace, made these figures a joy to paint.  I finished these three figures in about two hours.

Old Glory (Second Edition), King's Mountain, Perry

King's Mountain, Fife & Drum

The figures are a good match for existing ranges.  Their height is perfect, and their bulk falls somewhere between Perry and Old Glory.

I think it's time to order a regiment for my collection.

5th New York Volunteer Infantry, Sash and Saber

Chris Hughes of Sash and Saber sculpts my favorite Civil War figures in 28mm.  I have had these zouaves primed and ready for painting for a couple of years now.  As I make my way through my lead pile, these made a nice distraction from American Revolution and Napoleonic figures.

I've always thought the 5th New York had the best looking zouave uniform of the war.

The flags are from GMB.  All of my 28mm Civil War regiments have GMB flags.  It's one area on which I am unwilling to compromise.

The 5th NY's NCOs had yellow rank chevrons on a red background.  It looks pretty striking.

The sculpts are full of animation while still looking like a disciplined unit.
